Throughout this document, “we” and “us” mean Downtown Piano Lab, MB, and “you” means the person who installs or uses Cadenza.
Who actually sells you the licence
Payment is not taken by us. Cadenza is sold through Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the merchant of record: they are the seller on the invoice, they calculate and remit VAT in your country, and the purchase contract for the transaction is with them.
That split matters when something goes wrong. Payment problems, invoices and VAT — Lemon Squeezy. The software itself, the licence, bugs and refunds — us, at the address above. Write to us either way and we will point you to the right place.
2. What the licence gives you
Buying Cadenza buys a licence to use it. You do not buy the software itself, and no copyright transfers to you.
The licence is personal, worldwide, non-exclusive and perpetual for the version you bought. Under it you may:
- Install and use Cadenza on any computer you personally use — your studio machine, your laptop, the piano-room machine. The licence follows the person, not the hardware. One licence key activates one machine at a time; a machine can be released from Settings and activated somewhere else.
- Use it commercially. This is explicit and unconditional: stream with it, monetise those streams, teach paid lessons with it, run it in a studio you charge for, and use its exports in work you are paid for.
- Keep and use everything it produces. Notation, MusicXML, MIDI and PNG files you export are yours. We claim nothing in them and nothing in the music you play.
- Make backup copies for your own use.
If several people each need Cadenza on their own machine at the same time — a school, a studio with a team — each person needs a licence. Write to us; group arrangements are possible and we would rather agree one than have you guess.
3. What the licence does not allow
- Reselling, renting, sub-licensing or redistributing the application or its installer.
- Sharing or publishing your licence key.
- Removing or altering credits, notices or licence text inside the application.
- Redistributing the bundled piano samples or fonts as a standalone library or font package. They are included under their own licences (section 6) for use inside Cadenza.
- Reverse engineering, decompiling or disassembling the application — except where the law grants you that right regardless of what a contract says. In the EU that includes the interoperability rights under Directive 2009/24/EC, and nothing here limits them.
4. The trial
Cadenza runs for fourteen days with every feature unlocked and asks for no payment details to do it. When the trial ends the application keeps opening and keeps working as a chord and scale display; the recorder, the detachable windows, the practice modes and export are held behind a licence.
The trial is per machine and is meant to be taken once. Resetting it by reinstalling is not something we chase, but it is not what the trial is for either.
5. Updates, and the fact that this is early
Cadenza 1.0 is a first public release. The front page lists, on purpose, the things it cannot do yet — triplets are placed but not bracketed, one voice per stave, one key signature per take, a fixed tempo. Those are current facts, not promises about the future in either direction.
Your licence covers all 1.x updates, and they are free. If there is ever a paid major version, buying it will be a choice and 1.x will keep working.
We may change what the application does between versions, including removing something that turns out to be wrong. If a change removes something you relied on, tell us — that is the kind of message that gets answered.
6. Other people's work inside Cadenza
Cadenza ships components made by other people, used under their licences. Their authors deserve the credit and, in one case, the licence requires it:

The full licence texts ship inside the application and sit next to the files they cover.
7. What we do not promise
Cadenza is provided as it is. We do not warrant that it will be free of defects, that it will suit a particular purpose of yours, or that it will run uninterrupted with every MIDI device ever made.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss — lost recordings, lost lessons, lost streams, lost time. Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to what you paid for the licence.
None of this removes your statutory rights. If you are a consumer in the EU, the UK or anywhere with similar law, you keep every right that law gives you against a trader — including the right to a remedy if the software is not as described. A paragraph in a licence cannot take those away, and this one does not try.
8. Ending the licence
You may stop using Cadenza at any time. If you seriously breach section 3 — reselling it, publishing keys — the licence ends, and we will say so in writing before it does, so that a misunderstanding can be a misunderstanding.
9. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of Lithuania. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country you live in, and you may bring proceedings in your own courts.
Before any of that: write to [email protected]. This is a small company and a disagreement over €49 should not need anyone's court.
Consumers in Lithuania may also apply to the State Consumer Rights Protection Authority (Valstybinė vartotojų teisių apsaugos tarnyba, vvtat.lt). Consumers elsewhere in the EU may use the alternative dispute resolution body for their own country.
10. Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the new version appears here with a new date, and the licence you already bought continues under the terms you bought it on. We will not rewrite history and call it an update.
